Buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) is a combination medication that includes
buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is a partial opiate agonist, which is different from Methadone, which is a full opiate agonist. It is mixed with Naloxone for added safety. It is available in tablet form, dissolvable film, and newly a monthly injection and 6 month implant. It is used to effectively treat opioid use disorder, and helps by decreasing withdrawal symptoms and cravings for opiates.

Preparing to Start Suboxone Therapy

  • No recent opiate use ( 12-24 hours) depending on opiate used
  • Set aside some time on your first day to wait at the clinic for observation and monitoring
  • Try to inform yourself about Buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone)
  • Bring someone for support and to drive you home if needed
